Despite the profound impact and challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 has been a landmark year for\u00a0Canada’s immigration system. <\/p>\n
Canada’s flagship immigration management system, Express Entry, had a record-breaking year, issuing more than 100,000 Invitations To Apply for the first time since it was launched in 2015.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The story is equally positive for Canada’s second largest immigration pathway: the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).<\/p>\n
Through their respective PNPs, Canada\u2019s provinces and territories can nominate immigration candidates\u00a0who wish to move\u00a0to Canada and reside in a particular province. Canada seeks to welcome over 80,000 immigrants per year under the various PNPs.<\/p>\n
Over the past year, Canada’s PNPs have maintained high levels of provincial nominations, in some cases exceeding quotas, and many have added new immigration streams to meet their most urgent and specific needs.<\/p>\n

Here is a look back at\u00a0some notable PNP-related news from 2020<\/p>\n
The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program topped last year’s total of provincial nominations with 8,050 nominations issued this year under all streams. Ontario also announced that it is likely to move to an Expression of Interest system in 2021.<\/p>\n
Alberta announced that it is launching two new immigration streams for international graduates: The International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream and the Foreign Graduate Start-up Visa Stream.\u00a0The province has also introduced an online portal to facilitate the application process under the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP).<\/p>\n
In 2020,\u00a0Saskatchewan held approximately 30 draws through the Saskatchewan Express Entry stream and the Saskatchewan Occupation In-Demand streams. The province\u00a0issued some 8,000 invitations to apply for a provincial nomination through both streams.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Manitoba issues invitation to apply for provincial nomination approximately every month through the\u00a0following three streams: Skilled Workers in Manitoba, Skilled Workers Overseas and International Education Stream. The province held well over 20 draws through each stream this past year\u00a0and issued over 5,000 invitations.<\/p>\n
The British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program\u00a0issues weekly invitations to the top-scoring provincial candidates through the following immigration categories:\u00a0\u00a0Express Entry British Columbia, Skills Immigration, Entrepreneur stream as well as its Tech Pilot Project. In 2020, the province invited more than 9,000 candidates to apply for a provincial nomination.<\/p>\n
This year, Nova Scotia approved a record number of applications for newcomers with\u00a03,517 applications, 1,617 are from the Atlantic Immigration Program and 1,900 from the Nova Scotia Nominee Program.<\/p>\n
