With the Canadian economy enjoying a period of steady growth, companies looking to hire additional employees are finding that competition for human resources is fierce. To succeed in this market, top executives are looking beyond their borders to fill their skills shortages. In a recent poll conducted by leading consulting firm Deloitte and Touche LLP, two thirds of top-tier executives felt it was important to look overseas for talent.<\/p>\n
The survey consulted 125 CEO\u2019s from top firms in Canada as well as the United States on the challenges facing their businesses. Almost two thirds of these executives felt that immigration of workers, particularly in the information technology sector, was important to their business. The business leaders were quite happy with the quality of graduates being produced by Canada\u2019s educational institutions \u201cbut the schools are not producing enough graduates to meet the demand” according to John Ruffolo of Deloitte Canada.<\/p>\n
With Canadian businesses growing at a faster rate than the population, immigration is vital to the competitiveness of the Canadian economy. To help meet this need, there are several programs in place to assist in bringing overseas talent to filljobs in Canada . One such initiative is theProvincial Nomination Program , which allows people to immigrate to Canada sooner if they are selected to meet the needs of a particular province. Another is a recent change to make it easier for foreign students to stay and work in their fields in Canada after completing their studies. According to Ruffolo, this is a path that has been used by Deloitte itself to meet its own human resources needs.<\/p>\n
