Federal Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, the Honourable Monte Solberg, will address a National Business Symposium on June 15th. The discussion is expected to explore solutions to Canada’s massive labour shortage. The gathering will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.<\/p>\n
A report released by the organization sponsoring this event, Canadian Employee Relocation Council (CERC), states that immigration has accounted for over 70 percent of the growth in Canada’s labour force since 1999. It also warns of an impending labour “crunch” if Canada doesn’t amend key parts of its immigration industry to facilitate the international mobility of skilled workers.<\/p>\n
Stephen Cryne, Executive Vice President of the CERC, recently went on record as saying that, “In the absence of increased immigration our [Canada’s] labour force will be unable to sustain any growth beyond 2011. The social and economic implications are daunting.”<\/p>\n
The session is expected to draw key business leaders from across the nation who will engage in discussions geared toward shaping future government policy. “This symposium will build greater awareness of the fact that with a global shortage of talent, it is becoming more and more difficult for Canadian business to recruit people on the world stage. We need immigration policies and programs that are geared to enticing talented people to come to Canada, not to put barriers in front of them.” Cryne says.<\/p>\n
