With England expecting a surplus of talent in the medical profession in the coming years, Canada is eager to attract doctors to fill shortages being faced throughout the country.<\/p>\n
According to a report by the Department of Health in England, a surplus of over 3200 specialist doctors is expected to emerge by the year 2010. With funding levels for the British National Health Service expected to decline slightly, many of these doctors will seek jobs abroad, and Canada will be working hard to attract these well-sought after professionals. Speaking to reporters, Dr. James Johnson, chairman of the British Medical Association, pointed to Canada as a destination of choice for British physicians if they are unable to secure employment in their home country.<\/p>\n
According to the Canadian Medical Association, over 3,500 doctors practicing in Canada today are from the United Kingdom and Ireland. “Like most other countries, we are short of medical manpower so this would be excellent” said Dr. Andrew Padmos, CEO of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Canadian communities are laying out the welcome mat with incentives to lure the professionals, driving up compensation for specialist physicians in the country.<\/p>\n
