Canada has become the first country to sign the Ottawa Protocol on Combating Anti-Semitism. The Protocol, which developed during the Interparliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism (ICCA) in Ottawa last year, is aimed at stopping hatred and discrimination, including anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Government of Canada is a leader in the fight against anti-Semitism,\u201d said Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Kenney. \u201cThe Ottawa Protocol complements what Canada is already doing to combat hatred and discrimination, including anti-Semitism. We are a member of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research. Here at home, we have launched programs to promote integration and social cohesion of Canadians from all backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n
Through this Protocol, nations will be able to measure and track their progress in combating anti-Semitism. The Protocol also calls for governments to reaffirm and successfully implement the United Nations\u2019 1948 Genocide Convention. The Protocol also calls for the establishment of an international task force who will identify and monitory hate on the internet and develop a system to record all hate crimes.<\/p>\n
\u201cSigning the Ottawa Protocol signals our continued commitment to leading a coordinated global effort to fight anti-Semitism,\u201d said Minister Baird. \u201cJust as Canada is moving ahead to develop and build a National Holocaust Monument in the National Capital Region, we also plan to take our commitment to parliamentarians around the world and suggest that they join us in signing the Protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n
