On Saturday, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) announced that special immigration measures for people affected by the January 12 earthquake in Haiti would be introduced effective immediately. Some types of Canadian immigration applications will now be processed on a priority basis.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to express my deepest sympathy and support for the people of Haiti. Canada has welcomed a large community of Haitians to this country and is working to reunite families affected by this disaster as quickly as possible. Haitian nationals who are currently in Canada will also benefit from special measures,\u201d said Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Canada Minister Jason Kenney. <\/p>\n
Applications to sponsor members of the family class who have been affected by the earthquake will be processed on a priority basis, whether they are new applications or existing ones. Applicants must demonstrate they have been affected by the earthquake. <\/p>\n
In addition, in-Canada applications from Haitian nationals to extend temporary resident status, as well as In-Canada applications for a work permit for Haitian nationals who are unable to support themselves, will also be processed on a priority basis. <\/p>\n
