This Right of Permanent Resident Fee was designed to help pay for settlement services for newly landed immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>The unpopular fee, Prime Minister Paul Martin now calls &#8220;a barrier to immigrants entering Canada&#8221;, is expected to be phased out over the course of the next Liberal party mandate. It will, however, undergo an immediate drop of $600 and a further decrease to $300 over the next twelve months.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are able now to basically remove that landing fee, but nonetheless provide the settlement services,&#8221; Martin explains.
