Tokyo, 12 March 2025 \u2013 The Government of Japan has allocated USD 55 million to support a wide range of operations to be implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in 2025, in line with IOM\u2019s Global Appeal. The funding will enable IOM to help migrants, displaced persons, returnees, and communities affected by crises, conflict, and disaster in 33 countries.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The Government of Japan has always been a committed and steadfast ally, supporting IOM’s operations through key contributions that enable us to help vulnerable people around the world,” said IOM Director General Amy Pope. \u201cOur longstanding partnership with the Government of Japan underscores the importance of international solidarity and shared responsibility in tackling global issues.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nearly 60 per cent of the funds will bolster activities in Sub-Saharan Africa, in line with the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) taking place in Yokohama in August. This includes border management solutions and support for displaced populations in C\u00f4te d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, and Uganda; as well as humanitarian aid for Sudan, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Somalia, and Egypt, which is hosting migrants and refugees affected by the conflict in Sudan.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In Asia and the Pacific, over 30 per cent of the Japanese contribution will assist local governments in reducing disaster risks and enhancing early warning systems, especially in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu, where the safety and development of hazard-prone communities is usually at stake. Palau, on the other hand, will benefit from assistance to strengthen its national border management systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Such support will also be crucial in addressing the crisis in Myanmar and its impact on neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh and Thailand, as well as the needs of vulnerable populations in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Vietnam and Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Japan’s contributions have also been instrumental in bringing relief and creating opportunities for Ukrainian communities and neighbouring, including Hungary and Slovakia over the past three years. Particularly in the areas of humanitarian aid, border management and climate action, the Government of Japan has been a consistent and committed partner of IOM.\u00a0<\/p>\n
