IRCC’s most recent Express Entry\u00a0draw, which occurred today,\u00a0saw the department conduct\u00a0its first category-based draw for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) candidates in 2024. This is IRCC’s first STEM draw since December 8, 2023.\u00a0During today’s draw, IRCC issued\u00a04,500\u00a0Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to eligible candidates with\u00a0a\u00a0minimum\u00a0Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 491.\u00a0<\/p>\n

IRCC’s April 11 draw follows a general draw yesterday (April 10, 2024) where the department issued 1,280 ITAs to eligible candidates in a general draw. The minimum CRS score for the April 10 draw was 549.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Note: This is a developing story, which\u00a0CanadaVisa will update later this week if\u00a0IRCC conducts any more\u00a0Express Entry draws.<\/p>\n

Express Entry<\/p>\n

Express Entry is the name of IRCC’s\u00a0application management system for immigration applications\u00a0made to three specific economic-class permanent residence (PR) programs. The programs managed under this system are the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Within the Express Entry system,\u00a0IRCC conducts three types of draws: general, program-specific,\u00a0and\u00a0category-based.\u00a0<\/p>\n

General and Program-specific Express Entry Draws<\/p>\n

IRCC’s first two draw types have been around since the department first\u00a0introduced the Express Entry system\u00a0in 2015. These draws are primarily\u00a0focused on the Canadian immigration candidates with the highest CRS scores.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These scores are unique numerical values\u00a0assigned to\u00a0all Express-Entry eligible candidates based on a variety of human capital factors (age, education, work experience etc.).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once the Express Entry candidate confirms their eligibility for at least one\u00a0of the three Express Entry-managed programs and\u00a0creates an online profile with IRCC, they will receive their CRS score. At this time, they must then wait for IRCC to conduct its next Express Entry draw to see if\u00a0they have met the criteria* and whether they will\u00a0receive an ITA.\u00a0<\/p>\n

*To receive an ITA from IRCC, candidates must have a CRS score above the cut-off score determined by IRCC\u00a0for that given draw<\/p>\n

Note:\u00a0ITAs are the only way an Express Entry candidate can apply for PR in Canada.<\/p>\n

Category-Based Express Entry Draws<\/p>\n

First conducted in June 2023, IRCC first introduced category-based draws in May last year as a way to attract Canadian immigration candidates\u00a0with specific types of\u00a0work experience and\u00a0proficiencies, which the department deemed to be “in-demand” based on\u00a0Canada’s labour market and demographic needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Already confirmed to be continuing with the same six focus categories in 2024, IRCC chose candidates with the following attributes as areas of priority for its category-based draws:<\/p>\n
