Canada’s immigration department\u00a0conducted its second Express Entry draw in as many days, this time\u00a0issuing 7000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in a category-based draw\u00a0for eligible candidates with French-language proficiency. This is the first time IRCC has issued 7,000 ITAs in a single draw since March 29, 2023.\u00a0The minimum\u00a0Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of all candidates who received an\u00a0ITA in today’s draw was 365.<\/p>\n

Today’s draw follows another\u00a0draw that took place yesterday (January 31), during which\u00a0IRCC issued 730 ITAs (in an all-program draw)\u00a0to eligible candidates with a minimum CRS of 541.<\/p>\n

Express Entry<\/p>\n

Express Entry is the name that IRCC has given to the\u00a0application management system Canada uses to manage immigration applications from any of the following\u00a0three economic-class permanent residence programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).<\/p>\n

Since June 2023, Canada has conducted a second type of Express Entry draw in addition to\u00a0so-called\u00a0“standard” Express Entry draws. This new type of draw is called a\u00a0category-based draw\u00a0and it differs from standard draws because it\u00a0is more intently\u00a0focused on\u00a0helping the Canadian\u00a0government\u00a0address specific labour market challenges (more on that later).<\/p>\n

Standard Express Entry Draws<\/p>\n

“Standard” Express Entry draws focus on ranking eligible candidates by an\u00a0objective value assigned to them based on several human capital factors.\u00a0This score, known as their CRS score, is what determines who will receive an\u00a0ITA in a given Express Entry draw.<\/p>\n

To be considered for an ITA through a standard Express Entry draw,\u00a0candidates must follow the following steps:\u00a0<\/p>\n

  1. Self-assess their eligibility for any of the three Express Entry-managed programs<\/li>\n
  2. If eligible,\u00a0create an online profile with IRCC and formally enter the Express Entry candidate “pool”<\/li>\n
  3. Receive their\u00a0CRS score and await the next Express Entry draw* from IRCC<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    *ITAs are only given to eligible candidates with CRS scores above the cut-off score determined for that Express Entry draw\u00a0<\/p>\n

    Note: Receiving an\u00a0ITA is the only way that Canadian immigration candidates\u00a0can apply for permanent residence<\/p>\n

    Category-Based Express Entry Draws<\/p>\n

    On the other hand, category-based\u00a0draws help Canada\u00a0bring in\u00a0more foreign skilled workers, but in a manner that focuses on foreign nationals who have\u00a0work experience or proficiencies that IRCC has\u00a0designated as a key area of need. At the time of writing, the following six categories have been designated as areas of focus for IRCC’s category-based draws:<\/p>\n
