In today’s round of invitations, Canada’s immigration department issued 400\u00a0Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in a category-based draw for those with recent work experience in Agriculture and Agri-Food occupations.\u00a0This marks the department’s first Agriculture\/Agri-Food occupation draw since September 28 this year.\u00a0All candidates who received an ITA in today’s category-based draw\u00a0had a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 386. <\/p>\n
Today’s draw follows three draws in the prior three days. The results of those draws are as follows:<\/p>\n
December 20: IRCC issued 670 ITAs to eligible Transport occupation draw candidates with a minimum CRS of 435<\/p>\n
December 19: IRCC issued 1,000 ITAs in a Trade occupation draw for candidates with a minimum CRS of 425<\/p>\n
December 18: IRCC conducted an all-program round of invitations, issuing 1,325\u00a0ITAs to eligible Canadian immigration candidates with\u00a0a minimum CRS score of 542\u00a0<\/p>\n
Express Entry<\/p>\n
Express Entry is the name of\u00a0Canada’s application management system that handles\u00a0immigration applications from three economic-class immigration\u00a0programs for permanent residents. Specifically, the federal government uses this application management system to oversee applicants who apply for permanent residence in Canada through\u00a0the Federal Skilled Worker Program\u00a0(FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)\u00a0and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).\u00a0<\/p>\n
Beginning in June 2023, Canada now operates both “standard” and category-based draws\u00a0for Express Entry.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Standard Express Entry Draws<\/p>\n
The difference between these types of draws lies in what they prioritize. Specifically,\u00a0“standard” Express Entry draws notably prioritize a candidate’s CRS score to rank them against other eligible candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This type of Express Entry draw\u00a0has a process that begins with a\u00a0candidate’s self-assessment\u00a0and confirmation of\u00a0their eligibility\u00a0for any of the three programs contained under the Express Entry application management system –\u00a0the FSWP, the CEC or the FSTP. Once verified as eligible,\u00a0candidates can\u00a0create an online IRCC profile and formally enter themselves\u00a0into the Express Entry candidate “pool”. Every candidate in the pool is then given a CRS score. CRS scores are a numeric\u00a0value assigned to each candidate\u00a0based on a variety of\u00a0human capital factors deemed important by IRCC.<\/p>\n
These scores, which allow the immigration department to rank objectively candidates against each other, determine which candidates will receive an ITA during a given Express Entry draw. In other words, during every Express Entry draw,\u00a0IRCC\u00a0will issue ITAs to eligible candidates with CRS scores above the cut-off score determined for that round of invitations (another phrase for “draw”).<\/p>\n
It is important to note that\u00a0the only way\u00a0for a Canadian immigration candidate to apply for Canadian permanent residence is after receiving an ITA.<\/p>\n
Category-Based Express Entry Draws<\/p>\n
IRCC began conducting a new type of Express Entry draw, called a\u00a0category-based draw, in June 2023. Intended to aid the federal government in its goal to\u00a0bring more foreign nationals with specific work experience or proficiencies to Canada, this\u00a0new draw type was designed and implemented as a means of helping address particularly prominent\u00a0labour market challenges across the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Note:\u00a0IRCC has indicated that they will conduct an annual review of the categories chosen as areas of focus for category-based draws and may alter the eligible categories if necessary<\/p>\n
